Sylvia
Swan: Musical Director

Sylvia Swan says she was told by
her parents that even as a very small child she loved to
sing. She joined her first choir at Age 7 and eventually entered
the Royal Academy of Music in London at Age 20, where she
studied under the guidance of
Roy Henderson. Sylvia had a successful career as a soloist
touring internationally with Opera Companies, doing mainly
Benjamin Britten. She settled in the North West with her family
and became a vocal teacher. For 21 years Sylvia conducted
"Fleetwood Choral" in addition to her involvement with local
children's choirs. Over 10 years ago she formed "Sylvan Sound"
and continues to combine her direction of the choir with her
teaching.

Sylvan Sound Ladies
Choir

Sylvan Sound is an all female
choir of around 18 members, formed over 10 years ago by our
conductor Sylvia Swan.
We sing a wide range of music.
some classical such as Vivaldi, Britten, Mozart, Strauss and
some by contemporary composers - John Rutter is a favourite
along with Simon and Garfunkel, some beautiful versions of
folk songs arranged by our accompanist David Chadwick and
a few pieces from other countries including the popular "Kalinka"
which we sing in Russian.
We are invited to sing
regularly at churches across the area both in concert and at
weddings. Some highlights have been Blackburn Cathedral and
Cartmel
Priory. The Priory was a particularly wonderful
venue for us, the acoustics in the Priory did justice
to our particular sound which we work hard to develop. We
have also shared the platform of the Marine Hall Fleetwood
with some impressive army musicians; the Kings Division
Normandy Band in a performance for Trinity Hospice - a
charity which we regularly support and sing for.
As well as at Skipton Festival
we have been successful at Fleetwood and Freckleton
festivals competing alongside some of the top choral groups
in the country.
